Since 1975, Yervant Gianikian and Angela Ricci Lucchi have developed a remarkable body of work, both in terms of the minute engagement with filmic, pictorial, and videographic matter, and with regards to the plurality of the historical issues covered (war, fascism, colonialism). Following the 2015 retrospective of their films and installations at the Centre Pompidou, this conference aims to form a discussion about the political and critical uses of archive images, while showing to what extent their practice defies the categories and analytical devices of the social sciences.Organized by the EHESS and Centre Pompidou, in partnership with La Fémis, the two conference days are concluded with the screening of the filmmakers’ latest work, in their presence.
