PAA - PROJECT ON ARTS AND AESTHETICS (2001-2008)

The International Project on Arts and Aesthetics (IPAA) was launched in 2008 by an interdisciplinary research group sponsored by National Taipei University of Education (NTUE), Ministry of Science and Technology (Taiwan), Ministry of Education (Taiwan).

This project begins with and follows the ANR project "Key Concepts in the Age of Crossing-Boundaries" which addressed the issue of "leisure in arts and aesthetics" and which involved international collaboration on three continents (Asia, North America, Europe) and between CRAL, IPAA and the University of Toronto, at the initiative of CRAL, from 2006-2010. It is also a follow-up to the PAA (Project on Arts and Aesthetics) which existed since 2001 and was linked to Soochow University in Taipei.

Since 2008, IPAA’s research themes have been closely related with CRAL’s ones: “Key-Concepts in the Age of Globalization” (2006-2010), “Passages in arts and aesthetics” (2009-2013), “Universality, Arts and Artists” (2012-2015), “Visuality and inter-translatability in the arts” (2014-2018), “Multiculturality in Arts and Aesthetics, Case Studies” (2018-2022).

Le Projet international sur les arts et l'esthétique (IPAA) a été lancé en 2008 par un groupe de recherche interdisciplinaire, financé par la National Taipei University of Education (NTUE), le ministère pour la science et la technologie de Taïwan, le ministère de l’éducation de Taïwan.

Ce programme a commencé avec et fait suite au projet ANR « Concepts-clés dans l’âge de la mondialisation» qui portait sur « la question du loisir dans l’art et l’esthétique » et qui engageait une collaboration internationale sur trois continents (Asie, Amérique du Nord, Europe) et entre le CRAL, l’IPAA et l’Université de Toronto, à l’initiative du CRAL, de 2006 à 2010. Il fait également suite au PAA (Project on Arts and Aesthetics) qui existait depuis 2001 et qui était lié à l’université Soochow, à Taïwan.

Depuis 2008, les thèmes de recherche de l’IPAA sont restés intimement liés avec ceux du CRAL : « Concepts-clés dans l’âge de la globalisation » (2006-2010), « Passages dans l’art et l’esthétique » (2009-2013), « l’art et les artistes universels » (2012-2015),  « Visualité et inter-traductibilité dans les arts » (2014-2018), « Multiculturalité dans l’art et l’esthétique, études de cas » (2018-2022).

« Multiculturalité » est un concept nouveau, détaché des a priori essentialistes (tels que véhiculés dans le multiculturalisme, l’hybridité, l’identité, le nationalisme, l’inter-culturalité), qui doit permettre d’explorer une réalité contemporaine dans le domaine des arts et de l’esthétique.

IPAA RESEARCH PROJECT: SKETCH IN ARTS AND AESTHETICS  / 2015 - 2018

PROGRAMME DE RECHERCHE IPAA : L’ESQUISSE DANS L’ART ET L’ESTHÉTIQUE / 2015- 2018

L’esquisse dans l’art et l’esthétique avait pour objectif d’examiner aussi bien les formes graphiques de l’esquisse (tracés, brouillons, plans, dessins, schémas, etc.) que toutes les autres modalités que cette dernière peut prendre (maquettes, prototypes, ébauches, gabarits, animations, simulations, etc.), mais aussi les formes de pensée qu’elle implique, dans un dialogue interculturel.

The project “Sketch in arts and aesthetics” aimed at examining graphic forms of sketch (maps, drawings, designs, schemes, etc.), as well as any other modes of sketches (like prototypes, samples, patterns, archetypes, graphics, animations, simulations, etc.), and the forms of thought they imply, in an intercultural dialogue.

The research project "Visuality and Inter-Translatability in the Arts" (2014-2018) examined the processes of transmission, transformation and translatability from one art form to another, but also from one period to another, or from one culture to another.

Le programme de recherche « Visualité et inter-traductibilité dans les arts » (2014-2018) s’est interrogé sur les processus de transmission, de transformation et traductibilité d’un art à un autre, mais aussi d’une période à une autre, ou d’une culture à une autre.

PROGRAMME DE RECHERCHE IPAA : CONCEPTS CLÉS À L’ÂGE DE LA MONDIALISATION – ARTS ET ARTISTES UNIVERSELS / 2008- 2015

This project was developed from 2008 to 2015, within the framework of the International Research Group (GDRI) "Anthropology and History of the Arts", a collaboration between the musée du quai Branly and EHESS. This project was led by Yolaine Escande in collaboration with anthropologist Denis Vidal (IRD) in Paris, and with Johanna Liu in Toronto and Taipei.

The purpose of the research on "art and universal artists" was to analyze the new "horizons", the spaces that emerge as a result of borrowings, mixtures and interactions between the arts, in new forms and aesthetic appreciations, in the fields of research, and to see how in our everyday life we are in turn shaped and changed by these interactions.

Ce programme s’est développé de 2008 à 2015, dans le cadre du Groupe de recherche international (GDRI) « anthropologie et histoire des arts », une collaboration entre le musée du quai Branly et l’EHESS. Ce projet était dirigé par Yolaine Escande en collaboration avec l’anthropologue Denis Vidal (IRD) à Paris, et avec Johanna Liu à Toronto et à Taipei.

L’objet de la recherche sur « l’art et les artistes universels était d’analyser les nouveaux « horizons », les espaces qui apparaissent en raison des emprunts, mélanges et interactions entre les arts, dans les nouvelles formes et appréciations esthétiques, dans les domaines de recherche, et de voir comment dans notre vie de tous les jours nous sommes à notre tour modelés et transformés par ces interactions.

PROGRAMME DE RECHERCHE IPAA : CONCEPTS CLÉS À L’ÂGE DE LA MONDIALISATION – PASSAGES DANS L'ART ET L'ESTHÉTIQUE

The project "Passages in Art and Aesthetics" referred to Raymond Bellour's sense of "passages" in "Passages between images" (not Benjamin's or post-modernism's sense of "passages"). It consisted in studying passages in both time and space, in different art forms, and in different forms of cultural expression. It was declined in particular around the theme of landscape.

Le projet « Passages dans l’art et l’esthétique » se référait au sens de « passages » dans « Passages entre les images » chez Raymond Bellour (et non au sens de « passages » chez Benjamin ou dans le post-modernisme). Il consistait à étudier les passages à la fois dans le temps et dans l’espace, dans différentes formes d’art, et sous diverses formes d’expressions culturelles. Il s’est décliné en particulier autour du thème du paysage.

PROJECT ON ARTS AND AESTHETICS (PAA) /2001-2008

The Project on Art and Aesthetics (PAA) has been created in 2001 in order to facilitate the exchanges between French, Canadian, and Taiwanese researchers and professors. It helped coordinated the CNRS financial support called APN (Support to New Projects) for the “Chinese Arts and Western Aesthetics” project (2001-2003) in Taiwan. This project contributed a reflection CRAL undertook on the non-western modes of thought through arts and aesthetics. This project has been followed up by the ones on “Frontiers of arts, frontiers of aesthetics” (2004-2008), “Passages in arts and aesthetics” (2009-2013), and by the ANR “Key-Concepts in the Age of Crossing-Boundaries” (2006-2010).

Le Project on Art and Aesthetics (PAA) a été créé en 2001 afin de faciliter les échanges entre les chercheurs et enseignants-chercheurs taïwanais et français, puis canadiens. Il a permis de coordonner à Taïwan l’APN (aide à projets nouveaux, financé par le CNRS) « arts chinois et esthétique occidentale » (2001-2003), qui participait à une réflexion menée au CRAL sur les modes de pensée non-occidentaux à travers les arts et l’esthétique. Ce programme a été suivi par celui sur les « Frontières de l’art, frontières de l’esthétique » (2004-2008), « Passages dans l’art et l’esthétique » (2009-2013), puis par l’ANR « Key-Concepts in the Age of Globalization » (2006-2010).

Le programme APN a permis d’organiser deux colloques. L’un s’est tenu en juin 2001, portant sur Art cinématographique et différences culturelles et a inauguré les échanges entre le CRAL et les partenaires taïwanais ; l’autre, portant sur Les frontières de l’esthétique devait avoir lieu en juin 2003 mais, en raison du SRAS, ce colloque a été reporté d’un an et s’est tenu les 10 et 11 juin 2004, après la conclusion officielle de l’opération APN :

▶ Colloque international Art cinématographique et différences culturelles, Salle des conférences, Taipei, Université de Soochow (7-8 juin 2001). Organisateurs : Institut d’art et d’esthétique (Yolaine Escande et Johanna Liu), Faculté des lettres et sciences sociales de l’Université de Soochow, CRAL.

▶ Colloque international : Les frontières de l’esthétique (10-11 juin 2004) Organisateurs : Institut d’art et d’esthétique, Faculté des lettres et sciences sociales de l’Université de Soochow, CRAL, Paris ; responsables : Yolaine Escande et Johanna Liu. Langues du colloque : français, anglais et chinois.
