Film Among the Arts

Mercredi 11 janvier 2017, 17h-19h - EHESS, salle 13 - 105 boulevard Raspail, 75006 Paris

In comparison with architecture and music this lecture explores three questions: a) the specific spatial and temporal relations established by movies; b) the pictorial dynamics films especially display in their relation to photography and the relation of film to the performing arts ; c) analysis of the narrative disposition of movies in comparison especially with literature, accompanied by observations concerning the relationship between documentary and fictional films.
Illusion and Immersion in Cinema

Jeudi 12 janvier 2017, 17h-19h - EHESS, salle 13 - 105 boulevard Raspail, 75006 Paris

The foregoing analysis of the formal dispositions of – primarily fictional – films leads in the following lecture to a critique of illusionistic theories, proposing a revised understanding of bodily, emotional and intellectual involvement in the process of movies.

Film and Philosophy

Mercredi 8 février 2017, 17h-19h - EHESS, salle 13 - 105 boulevard Raspail, 75006 Paris

Focusing on the internal affairs between philosophy and film, this lecture will argue that although the common point of reference of both enterprises lies in their ability to explore the human form of life from the inside out, film (as well as the other arts) remain in a permanent conflict with philosophy.

Dimensions of a Hermeneutics of Film
