John Pier

John Pier est professeur d’anglais retraité de l’université de Tours, où il a enseigné les littératures américaine et anglaise des XIXe et XXe siècles. Membre statutaire du CRAL (CNRS/EHESS), il co-dirige au sein de ce centre le séminaire « Recherches contemporaines en narratologie » depuis 2003. Ses travaux portent sur une approche transdisciplinaire de la théorie du récit, s’appuyant sur la sémiotique, la théorie de la complexité, l’intertextualité, l’intermédialité et l’analyse du discours ainsi que sur la narratologie dans ses différentes déclinaisons théoriques et nationales. Co-rédacteur de la collection Narratologia chez De Gruyter, il est aussi co-fondateur (en 2009) de l’European Narratology Network (ENN), dont il fut président de 2013 à 2015. Il est l’auteur de nombreux articles scientifiques et chapitres de livre et directeur ou co-directeur de plus de quinze ouvrages collectifs, dont The Dynamics of Narrative Form (2004), Métalepses. Entorses au pacte de la représentation (2005), Théorie du récit. L’apport de la recherche allemande (2005), Theorizing Narrativity (2008), Narratologies contemporaines (2010), Handbook of Narratology (2009 ; 2e éd. 2014), Emerging Vectors of Narratology (2017), Jan Mukařovský : Écrits 1928-1946 (2018), Le formalisme russe cent ans après (2018), Contemporary French and Francophone Narratology (2020) et Handbook of Diachronic Narratology (2023).

John Pier is a retired professor of English at the University of Tours, where he taught 19th- and 20th-century American and British literature. A statutory member of the CRAL (CNRS/EHESS), he has co-directed at this center the seminar “Recherches contemporaines en narratologie since 2003. His work bears on a transdisciplinary approach to narrative theory based on semiotics, complexity theory, intertextuality, intermediality and discourse analysis as well as on narratology in its various theoretical and national declensions. Co-editor of the collection Narratologia at De Gruyter, he is also the co-founder (2009) of the European Narratology Network (ENN), of which he was chair from 2013 to 2015. He is the author of numerous articles and book chapters and has edited or co-edited more than fifteen collective volumes including The Dynamics of Narrative Form (2004), Métalepses.
